Both of the above answers are incorrect. The reason why Facebook acquired a VR company is because they believe VR will be the next popular platform after mobile. VR offers an immersive experience and FB believes that it will eventually become part of everyday life. Ignore what it looks like today - FB is thinking many years down the road when the technology becomes usable for the masses. FB wants to be the owners and definers of what that future platform will be. Any distribution platform with display technology is something FB, Google, Apple, Microsoft would all be interested in. Is VR the future? FB thinks so.
