The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH) is an application-oriented research institute in the fields of high-frequency electronics, photonics and quantum physics. It researches electronic and optical components, modules and systems based on compound semiconductors. These devices are key enablers that address the needs of today’s society in fields like communications, energy, health, and mobility. It covers the entire value chain from design to ready-for-delivery systems.

At our Joint Lab for Integrated Quantum Sensors, we develop miniaturized and robust quantum sensors for applications outside the lab – ranging from mobile measurement heads to space-qualified platforms.

For a new research project focusing on the development of a compact optical atomic clock based on thermal strontium atoms, we are looking for a scientific employee to develop, assemble, and qualify micro-integrated optical systems.

Your tasks

• You will work on the integration of optical, mechanical, and vacuum subsystems for compact quantum sensors.
• In collaboration with our team at FBH, you will develop and qualify components, processes, and technologies for the microintegration of electro-optical systems.
• You will integrate miniaturized free-space optical systems using high-precision robotic positioning systems.
• You will develop and operate test and qualification setups for optical components, integration processes, and micro-optical assemblies.
• Depending on your technical background, your work will include:
  o optical inspection and profilometry,
  o mechanical and thermal qualification,
  o vacuum technology and vacuum qualification,
  o microintegration of electro-optical assemblies,
  o characterization of laser systems and optical assemblies,
  o additive manufacturing processes for technical ceramics to create compact optical platforms, vacuum components, or weight-optimized mounting structures

Your profile

• A scientific university degree (Master’s/Diploma) in physics, photonics, technical optics, physical engineering, mechanical engineering, microsystems technology, aerospace engineering, or a related field
• A passion for details and strong manual dexterity
• An independent, structured, and meticulous approach to work
• Enjoyment of working in an interdisciplinary team
• Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of German is a plus

Experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable:

• Assembly and joining technology, particularly adhesive joining processes
• Microintegration, as well as the development and qualification of optical systems
• Laser and photonics systems
• Vacuum technology and UHV qualification
• CAD-based design and FEM simulation, e.g., using ANSYS
• Data acquisition and data analysis, e.g., using Python
