Writing a thank-you note to a mentor

Your mentor is someone who provides you with the resources and support you need to grow in your career. If you are lucky enough to have a mentor, it's important to show them your gratitude over the course of your relationship. One way to do this is by writing them a thoughtful thank-you letter. Here we discuss what a well-written thank-you note entails and explain how to write a thank-you note to a mentor.

What is a thank-you note?

A thank-you note is a type of correspondence that shows your gratitude. In this letter, you show your appreciation for another person and everything they have done for you. Writing a thank-you note gives you a chance to let someone else know you acknowledge and value what they did.

The format of a thank-you note can vary based on your relationship and the circumstance. Whether it is a physical letter or an email, a thank-you note typically follows the format of a traditional letter. Most often you include a greeting, body paragraphs, and a respectful closing.

Reasons to send a thank-you note to your mentor

These are a few reasons it’s a good idea to send a thank-you note to your mentor:

  • Build your relationship. A thank-you letter can help you continue to preserve the special relationship you have with your mentor. By regularly showing your gratitude, they may feel more appreciated and apt to continue to offer their help and support. Even if this seems like the end of a chapter for their mentorship, you never know when they can help you in the future.
  • Facilitate a professional connection. You never know when your mentor can connect you to an exciting job opportunity. By showing your thanks, they can be reminded of what a thoughtful and professional person you are. This can work in your favor if they were to ever be in the position to refer someone to a job.
  • Give them something special. Mentors and mentees often develop special relationships. A thank-you note is a special keepsake they can hang onto. Looking at your letter can remind them of your time together and why they got into being a mentor in the first place.

When to send a thank-you note

Feel free to send a thank-you note to your mentor on a whim. Virtually anyone will be delighted to receive appreciation for the work they do. You can also send a thank-you letter after a significant event or if they recently gifted you something. Here are common scenarios when you would send your mentor a thank-you note:

  • Once they agree to be your mentor.
  • When they taught you an especially helpful life lesson.
  • After you earn a job opportunity as a result of their help.
  • When you get close to the anniversary of your mentorship.
  • At the end of your mentorship program.

How to write a thank-you note to a mentor

Craft a well-written thank-you note to a mentor with these steps:

1. Start with your greeting

A thank-you note is a perfect opportunity to formally thank your mentor. Begin the letter with a polite greeting, such as ‘Dear [Your Mentor’s Name].’ By having a more professional greeting, than ‘Hey,’ or ‘Hi,’ you are making the letter more meaningful.

2. Share your reason for writing

Start the letter off by explaining why you are showing your gratitude. This may be due to some event that took place, such as you get a job offer or interview as a result of their help. Likewise, you could simply say you felt like it was a good time to show your appreciation.

3. Include specific details

In the letter, discuss a few specific things your mentor has done for you. Include details that show their support and guidance have made a positive impact on your life. You could even discuss the meaningful memories you have with them.

4. End with a thoughtful closing

End your letter by once again thanking them. Add a few closing lines that make it clear that you value your mentor/mentee relationship. Make sure to add a thoughtful sign-off, like ‘Warmly,’ ‘Sincerely,’ or ‘Best.’

Tips for writing a thank-you note to a mentor

Use these tips to write a quality thank-you note to a mentor:

  • Show you want to give back. Although it’s not always necessary, you could offer to help your mentor as a way to express your gratitude. For instance, you could assist them in any upcoming projects they may have.
  • Make it sincere. Write your thank-you note when you are truly feeling thankful. Use your writing to express how much their mentorship means to you, and include details that show they changed your life for the better.
  • Use your neatest handwriting. When sending a letter via mail, make sure to write it in your neatest handwriting and take your time. Choose a pen that doesn’t bleed easily to help your letter look extra special.

Example of a thank-you note to a mentor

Here is an example of a thank-you note to a mentor that you can use as inspiration for your own:

Dear Veronica,

I am writing to express my deep appreciation for all of your help over these past two years. Without you, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to apply for my current role. All of your support and guidance made me realize that I have the capability to chase my dreams.

One time that really stands out to me is when we met at Central Park and discussed my goals. I’ve never had someone so invested in my future before. I promise to pay it forward and find someone who I can mentor one day. I will emulate the caring and kind strategies you used to help a college student take charge of their future.

As our mentorship program comes to an end, I hope we can continue to maintain such a special relationship. If you ever need help with any of your projects, please let me know. I am more than happy to help. Thank you again for always being there.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Walls
