I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Caterpillar in Oct 2011
Interview
There was only 1 interview, though it was split into 2 sections. The interviewers were very disarming, and the process went very well. All communications with Caterpillar were by email - no phone calls. They expect the interviewing interns to attend the information session, where you can ask any question without being under pressure. You'll also find out a lot about Caterpillar, and get some free pizza. The recruiter for my school has been helpful in answering Caterpillar related questions and putting me in touch with various people within Caterpillar.

Question 1
"What was your greatest achievement"? I wasn't quite sure how to answer this, but simply asking them to clarify helped a lot.
I applied online. I interviewed at Caterpillar (Peoria, IL)
Interview
Not the conventional process, but I had met with some employees who set me up with an informational phone interview with the head of recruiting. About a month later she informed me I received an official interview. They assigned me a mentor of sorts, who was very helpful and took me out to dinner the night before. I thought I did very well on the interview stage but did not get offered the job. My "area to improve" was technical aptitude, which was I admit I was not the most prepared for, as many HR employees I had met with had told me leadership/team building was the name of the game. Great interviewing experience though, and obviously a great company.
