Performed a mathematical test online with questions on probability, statistics and machine learning. An invigilator was virtually present throughout the test. All questions in Section A were compulsory to answer, and I had to choose one from Section B (range of questions in statistics, probability, programming and mathematics).
I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at G-Research in Mar 2021
Interview

Interview questions [1]
Question 1
A fair coin is tossed 100 times to create a sequence of heads and tails.
A participant is allowed to ask 1 yes or no question (e.g. was the first coin flip heads?), then plays a game where he tries to guess all 100 coins. The participant is awarded $1 for every coin guessed correctly, and loses $1 for each incorrect guess. Find and prove an optimal strategy.
I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at G-Research (London, England) in Apr 2021
Interview
- written exam
- triage interview (maths, finance)
- three technical interviews (1 hour), I chose maths, ML and programming.
- interview with research manager
I felt in control in the technical interviews, then I couldn't answer one brain teaser in the first "HR interview", and that's it. I think this is not a clever way to measure someone's ability to do research.
