I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Microsoft in Jan 2014
Interview
I received an email from a researcher at MSR saying he would like to talk on Skype. We talked for around 10-15 mins mostly describing the problem they had for me to work on. I was only asked whether I am interested or not and of course I was. My expertise was what they were looking for. Received another email the same day offering the internship and asking for my prefers starting day.
I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Microsoft (Redmond, WA) in Mar 2015
Interview
It was a three month long process. I was asked by my mentor to review a lot of research papers and send him over the review comments. In addition, since the research project I worked on was primarily based on my brainchild idea, I had to convince him that the idea should work in reality and I can demonstrate a proof of concept by the end of the internship.
