I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Tesco (Newcastle upon Tyne, England) in Jun 2015
Interview
I applied online answering basic questions that take down the majority of applicants based on what they answer, it was fairly simple if you apply common sense, then I got a phone call about 11am two days later (I applied the day that the application closed) asking me to go to an interview. My transport fell through and they agreed to move the date to the next day.
Arriving at the interview we were sat in a room, papers stacked in front of us about criminal records, availability, NI number and other paperwork. We were given a brief about what the job was going to be about, what it entailed and what was expected of us during the course of the employment. The manager, the line manager and the guy who phoned me came in. After a quick question and answering round, of which I didn't really say much, we were escorted throughout the store and shown the areas we would be working, the health and safety and some of the people we would be working with. This stage only took about 30 minutes and wasn't completely thorough but enough to get a feel of the job.
At this point we were about two hours into it (one of the guys that turned up asked a question after every point, which delayed a lot of it). Back in the room we were asked questions about what we had just been shown, expecting to answer, it wasn't nothing too formal, the guy interviewing us did a great job at making it comfortable so we were joking around. Afterwards we were offered a 10 minute break and I was the first to be interviewed. The room was small and the interview was only about 5 minutes, it was uncomfortable and I spent the majority of the time story-explaining my points and moving my arms too much. The guy ended the interview after I asked some basic questions: Would the contract be extended? Would my hours be extended? What is the rest of the interview process and how long would I wait for the next stage.
I was contacted four or five days later asking me if I still wanted the job and that it was mine, I was to come in that Saturday for an induction at 10am. It was paid, it lasted about five or six hours. The hours advertised, however, changed but that was really the only complaint. We were shown videos about Tesco and shown around again.
The interview went very easy. They asked 4 questions and informed me that they will call me in the end of the week. I got call the day itself of the interview and I got the job.
