Pros

Strong business strategy in the AV industry Great environment as an engineer for gaining experience in customer interactions Comp was competitive, skewed toward equity

Cons

It's a shame that the cons outweighed even those very solid pros Developer Stress Feature requests from customers can come at any time and get pushed directly onto software developers with almost no notice Management expects developers to fulfill these sudden and absolute deadlines along with anything else scoped for each 5-week cycle, even if that means (to paraphrase one manager) taking time out of sleep to finish All engineers additionally have to sit in long customer meetings when bugs or questions arise Toxic Culture To fit in as an engineer, you'd better be a white/Asian frat bro in your 20s with no family or other home commitments Borderline hazing toward new employees when arbitrary procedures are not followed to the tee Respect is earned and ideas adopted by being the loudest, most argumentative, "scariest" person in the room Any feedback brought up to higher-ups was not only discounted, but also treated as hostile, discouraging any negative comments C-Suite made baseless personal accusations about a competitor's leadership in an effort to sway my signing decision, super unprofessional Messy Codebase Amazing how a simulation company has software that runs so slowly, with brute-force, memory-intensive procedures now ossified into its architecture that they're just recently starting to care about because they pass on the costs of execution to their customers Junior developers get hit the hardest trying to clean up all the code debt that the senior developers introduced in previous years' rush to get a product out

Pros

- Career growth (I cannot emphasize this one enough!) - As a woman in tech, I’ve felt empowered by the ability to engage with any leadership level without feeling intimidated or unwelcomed. Getting exposure to growth opportunities is something I value deeply. - Interactions with my manager have made me think big about my career. - Strong sense of community, I moved without knowing anyone in the bay area, so this was extremely important to me. - Qasar and Peter are approachable executives; they’ve made time to brainstorm with me and have trusted me to own new initiatives. In my previous FAANG jobs, I did not feel comfortable approaching leadership. - Strong business positioning. Benefits: - 401k matching (50%) - Equity - Free lunch + dinner - Educational + wellness budgets - 12 weeks of maternity/paternity leave - In-person work! I know this isn't for everyone, but I was going stir-crazy at home

Cons

- You’ll work much more than at a FAANG - Work can be challenging - Everyone is ambitious, so there is a bit of pressure to perform

Pros

Once in a life time opportunity to be part of a winning team and shape the future of autonomy. Major pros are the interesting market, exceptional team, and professional growth opportunities. Market Autonomy is an exciting technical problem space and your work has many positive real world implications. From an engineering perspective, technical challenges can range from machine learning for perception, computer graphics for simulation, infrastructure, advanced front end visualization, and data science for validating system safety, etc. From an impact perspective, your work directly contributes to safe development and testing for customers from all of the world with use-cases ranging from commercial vehicles (GM, Toyota, Nissan, VW, etc), to mining & construction, mobile robots, robo taxis, trucks, agriculture, etc. Considering how autonomy has the ability to create safer and cheaper ways of moving people and things, the real world impact of the work is high. Things will only be more autonomous in the future, so Applied is a great bet to make that future a reality Exceptional Team I've been part of many winning teams and respected institutions throughout my career / life and I can say hands down, the team at Applied is the best. Everyone on the team has a history of succeeding in the things they commit themselves to, yet everyone is still modest and has a strong willingness to learn from others and do their best work. Professional growth opportunities: Team is presented with unique access to leadership training programs, opportunities to work and live in other offices (Ann Arbor, Munich, Stockholm, Tokyo, Seoul, DC, etc), and straightforward way to change teams.

Cons

Not for everyone - Reality is you can't have your cake (be part of a fast growing winning team) and eat it too (have a relaxed slow paced work environment with low expectations). Doing ambitious things isn't easy and things you are expected to move quickly and do things well. This is great for people to see challenges as growth opportunities to take themselves to the next level. For people that don't aspire to be the best at what they do, the environment can be overwhelming. Work life balance is NOT what you would find at a relaxed team at a large technology company BUT is significantly better compared to other start up companies that I have worked for.
