Pros

Very stable employer. I contracted here during the financial crisis, and I was allowed to stay for the entire duration of my 6 month contract. If you want to advance here, you do need to work your butt off and understand big corporation politics, but this organization is large enough that opportunities exist in enough places.

Cons

Really hard to stand out. Hope you get a good tech lead and/or manager for this in engineering.

Pros

I work with some of the smartest, most talented people in the Valley. The company is moving fast and offers a lot of opportunities for professional growth. Management appreciates our efforts, and when things are going well bonuses are generous.

Cons

The work is difficult and the hours are long. The expectations continue to rise and the timelines continue to shrink. It's a tough place to work and--while often personally and professionally rewarding--not always a heck of a lot of fun.

Pros

Since working for Cisco after graduating my growth has been tremendous. Cisco is a place where there are many experts you can learn from and gain experience especially if you're like me, someone out of school two years.

Cons

Promotions are slow and its difficult to get recognition. I am lucky in that my manager and I have a good working dialogue and I know he is listening to my concerns. If you're ambitious and damn good at your job, you'll start to feel frustrated often at Cisco. Reason being promotions are slow and those who are the lowest performers are rewarded by keeping their job and those who are worth their salt aren't promoted fast enough. Of course, I'm sure this is common with large companies. In my opinion, Cisco needs to recognize fresh talent quickly, give them (me) opportunities to grow and responsibilities, and promote them quickly.
