Pros

Flexibility, industry leader, empowering, focused on continuing education and employee resource development. You get out of the experience what you put into it from what I've seen. There is room for growth and advancement but you must work for it. Training opportunities are nearly limitless - company provided distance learning, publications, classroom based training, you name it.

Cons

Visibility, disconnection, isolation. Working with so many great people in such a disconnected environment (remote/travelling/telecommuting) presents challenges to gaining visibility. The distributed nature of the job lends to a feeling of disconnection to the chain of command occasionally.

Pros

Good pay and nice facilities. The somewhat flexible work hours.

Cons

The management mentality that looks only at the bottom line and ignores needs and desires of employees on lower ranks. Variations in policies are widespread from one group and/or business unit to another. Some manager allow total freedom with regard to flextime and working at home while others forbid it for employees in the same job classifications. Employees outside of San Jose get short shrift in many areas including training and continuing education. Travel at company expense is not allowed on an equal/fair basis for all employees.

Pros

- Excellent talent. The people you work with are the best in the business. - The benefits are very good. - You are always challenged. - There is always something to learn.

Cons

- Salaries are low for the industry...there is a feeling that you should accept this because you work at Cisco. - It is very hard to get promoted, or get raises. Senior management routinely will stop all raises for years at a time, meaning that the only way to get a raise is by an "equity adjustment". - Teamwork is poor, when you send an email or leave a voicemail, the first thing most people do is look you up in the directory to see your title, if it is not good enough, don't plan on hearing anything back from that person.
