Pros

Good pay, fair bonus structure, stock options, company vehicle, good peers and store managers who really want to help the customer.

Cons

I worked as a DM at a previous company, and peers there said “no work life balance” it was because they were inefficient. This company truly gives you no work/life balance. 5.5 days expected in stores, reports due Sunday, conference calls Sunday and sometimes as early as 6:30am. DMs are glorified store managers. Expected to be in the store to fix years of mismanagement in weeks and use your salary to make up for the fact they don’t schedule enough hours. Expect to throw freight. Zero support. In 11 months there I had 5 bosses (RDs) and moved from #13th most tenured in my region to #5. Training is non existent, especially among store personnel who get zero training hours. Store managers get ideally two weeks with at training manager, but with the amount of turnover at DG that doesn’t always happen. Plus two weeks is not enough to learn everything. Total disconnect from corporate and the field. SMs are on hold for over an hour to reach HR or store support, or take months to fix maintenance issues including restrooms that have human waste. Our managers usually work 60-70, as their 50 hour expected workweek is usually impossibly to hit due to hours restrictions and call offs due to thin labor models.

Pros

Hiring process start with apply online and complete the assessment test, then, three days later got a call from SM for face-to-face interview which went well. She was very nice, friendly, and knowledgeable. Ask me questions about how to handle customer, what integrity means to you, what dependable means, and how to handle difficult customer. I answered the best I can. She gave me overview of the job responsibility of an Asst Store Manager, how important in minimizing shrink in the store, and maintaining store. Then, she called me again and offered me the job, then sent me the new hire packet/express hiring to do online. FIlled out all the necessary info and took a drug test that day(on a Tuesday), as well as they will check my background. A week later, also on a Tuesday, I got a call that I passed the drug test and background check, and told me to show up and fill out paperwork and started training that day. I was very, very happy that I got the job. I've been waiting for a week and they finally called me. Thanks to the wonderful Store Manager who kept me informed and I will working with her which I looked forward to.

Cons

The store is short-handed, and the store need a lot of work in being more presentable to customers.

Pros

I love working at Dollar General!! It's like working with a friend or in a tight knit family. I had a wonderful onboarding and training experience and really felt as though the team was invested in my growth and development. I was given more time to ramp up here than I've been given with any prior employer. I love working for such a stable company that has so many different career opportunities and paths for me to explore. With over 12 thousand stores, DCs and a huge support center, the opportunities are endless. I love my team and my job ~ thank you, Dollar General!! I'm grateful everyday to be a part of this organization.

Cons

I honestly have nothing to comment on here. How rare is that??? When I think about my experience with Dollar General, only positive thoughts come to mind. The company is growing at an unprecedented rate, the compensation package is very competitive and the culture is amazing. I love Dollar General!
