Pros

Ernst & Young is extraordinarily flexible and accomodating. I am the poster-child for Ernst & Young flexibility. After an internship in the Atlanta office, I was offered a full-time job. Due to changing life circumstances, I was unable to accept the position. However, the firm arranged for me to interview with its Baltimore office and I was offered another full-time position at that location. Ernst & Young was truthful about my job requirements and delivered on every promise made to me during the recruitment process. Ernst & Young had outstanding training programs that I participated in during my orientation period. I felt I was well-prepared for the work I was performing and I was surrounded by supportive and competent people.

Cons

Public accounting is a tough industry/profession. My internship lasted from January-March, so I got a taste of just how tough working sixteen hour days in a high-stress environment can be. Valuing a work-life balance and my time outside of work, the "busy season" is truly the downside of working for Ernst & Young. However, there isn't a public accounting firm in the world that doesn't have that same downside. Additionally, because the firm and its clients are so large, I was unable to get a sense of the "big picture" of many of the engagements that I participated in and did not see a great deal of "important" or "diverse" work. While I worked on only financial statement audits of public companies, I had peers who were involved in compilation and review engagements, government and not-for-profit engagements, actually performing analytics and substantive tests. I mostly footed, cross-footed, and recalculated balances. I also made a lot of photocopies, faxes, and coffee.

Pros

For me the best reason to work at Ernst & Young were the people. The firm is young, and filled with people that are eager to learn and develop their careers. The firm does a great job in educating you to be prepared for your career, they put a huge focus on this. Additionally you will progress faster at a public accounting firm like E&Y than you would in an industry position - you will work hard to get there, but you will get there much faster. Additionally there are so many leadership positions that you can sink your teeth into by simply volunteering. It is a great place to develop leadership, teamwork, and education on accounting.

Cons

Work/Life Balance is a recognized struggle in public accounting. Despite the firm's attempt to voice the ability to have work/life balance it doesn't fit in well with a "client serving" atmosphere. When your clients need work done, then need it done right then. This at times means sacrificing vacation or family plans. The work hours are also generally grueling. There are lulls during the year where the work load is light, but overall you will work more in public accounting that elsewhere. A lot of these negatives go hand-in-hand with the positives (i.e. you have low work/life balance because you are working hard and learning quicker than your peers in industry). Additionally you will find that becuase you are in an atmosphere with very driven people, some of those people are difficult to work with and do not see the opportuinty to nuture and develop their people. You really have to keep an eye out and manage the people that you work for - find the people that will develop your career and get on their jobs.

Pros

Ernst & Young provides accounting professionals witha great place to start their career, whether you plan to stay for many years or only a couple of years, it is a great resource to have on a resume. EY promotes flexibility at work and really provides flexibility to their employees. The pay is great in comparison to other peers in the same field and they provide the opportunity for accounting professionals to complete their 150 credits with a Leave of Absence in order to become eligible to sit for the CPA examination. There is also a direct billing relationship with two CPA prep courses to allow employees to be completely prepared for the exam. If you pass within a certain time frame of two years, a bonus is available to you. There are so many EY locations throughout the world, that there are plenty of opportunities to work close to home or to even take advantage of their Global Exchange program that is available to their high performing audit professionals. EY really cares about all levels of their employees and is continuously providing us with opportunities to learn and grow professionally and personally. Another great thing about the firm is that you are surrounded by brilliant professionals. I have really come to recognize that EY only hires people who have the necessary knowledge and also who have great attitudes. I have really enjoyed all of the teams that I have worked with and have been provided the opportunity to network with some great resources. The team environment is very rewarding. Another aspect of networking is being able to have one on one with the CEOs and CFOs and other important roles in the client sector. These resources can prove to be invaluable. The opportunities for advancement with the firm are unbelievable, whether you chose to stay in the audit sector or move on to other sectors such as transaction advisory services, fraud risk services, tax services, or even human resources. EY rewards their people and keeps us satisfied. I am very proud to say that I work for EY and I am also very confident that EY will prepare me for any future endeavors outside of the firm that I may chose to take on.

Cons

I would say one down side of being an audit professional at a Big 4 firm is the "busy season", which typically falls in the months of January through March. However, it does vary depending on the clients that you are assigned to and their year ends. It is a lot of hours, but it is rewarding to work in a team and accomplish a huge task.
