Temp data entry/informatics position, liked it but not enough to renew the 3 month contract - Lab Assistant Sanofi Employee Review

Pros

Genzyme has a great community atmosphere, a group cafeteria where people all come to eat together. They provide pizza once a week and some kind of ice cream or something like that, and everyone goes down and gets social together, which is nice. There were people right out of college such as myself, and some right out of grad school, and also some fun 40-something guys who kind of envied my young age and lack of children, so it was easy to get along with the other employees despite the corporate superstructure of the company. Also, my bosses were nice to me and clear about my responsibilities.

Cons

If you are want to get into clinical research, it is great. I was a temp and I saw the opportunity to advance, but it would have taken way too long and way too much time at low pay. The hourly rate was $16.50 per hour for data entry and some basic bioinformatics but I saw other people work and helped them. I also saw someone who started in the same position as me and it took two renewals of the temp contract for her to be offered a full time position. I was offered something similar, but I knew it would not be enough money. It could have been worth it if I decided to live at home but I really wanted to move out of my hometown and have my own apartment, so I left after one 3-month cycle. It worked out fine for me as I started working in a non-profit biotech facility in Cambridge, near my apartment that January.

Pros

Nice people to work with, not too pushy from direct supervisor

Cons

Pay is not as high as other big pharma, work culture starting to become toxic. We are starting to get more and more micromanaged in terms of needing to log exact work hours in the work computer. That becomes difficult when you are lab facing and not always on your laptop
