Pros

Search engine rating is meant to be a part time gig that you can fit in around your other responsibilities. It is not meant to be a salary that you primarily rely on. That said, there are definite pros and cons to each of the companies offering this very specific type of job, and Telus is by far one of the better ones. Pros include a reasonable hourly wage, adequate paid training, a well-written knowledgbase, reasonable performance expectations that are communicated well, technical issues are rare and quickly addressed, the employee site is user friendly, investing and EAP options are available that would not be available to most part time employees at other companies, it's just all around a good company to work for.

Cons

I feel like the cons are typical of most companies offering this job, and in Telus's case the cons are often offset in some way. One that most people would point out is that there are some weeks when few tasks are available, and the offset in Telus's case is that they won't penalize you for it. Yes, some other companies do penalize the rater for not making quota on a slow week; shocking I know. But Telus doesn't do that. Another thing I see frequently pointed out as a con is the unpaid exam required to onboard, but in my opinion that is significantly offset by the fact that it's taking the place of a traditional series of interviews. If asked to choose between investing time and energy into uncomfortable interviews with HR or studying for and taking an exam to test my merits for taking this job, my introverted self will happily choose the exam. Occasionally you may not understand why there is a disagreement on a particular rating score, but at least in Telus's case it's clear what they expected you to score even if you don't agree with the logic behind it. You won't be adjusting your expectations in the dark. Another potential con is the frustration of dealing with remote forms during onboarding, but again, that's going to be the same level of frustration with just about any company offering a rater job.

Cons

Lack of social interaction, There's a lot of terminology and scripts you have to learn and you have to really apply yourself mentally. you are graded on each call for staying on script and all aspects of the workflow.
