Pros

Glassdoor stands out as an excellent employer, boasting a positive work culture and a team of generally outstanding individuals. The flexibility offered in the form of a generous and unrestricted paid time off (PTO) policy, coupled with a flexible work schedule, is a significant advantage. Furthermore, the company supports remote work, allowing employees the freedom to work from any location, with reasonable policy guidelines in place and a refreshing absence of micro-management.

Cons

Following the layoffs in March 2023, there has been a significant cultural shift within the organization. Team morale has taken a hit, with employees experiencing elevated stress levels, frustration, and an underlying sense of apprehension about the future. The constant fluctuation in Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and procedural changes, such as turnover in the employee handbook, adds to the challenges. Advancing in one's career within the company is a formidable task. While there is an established promotion system, it appears to require urgent attention and improvement. The perception that decisions are heavily influenced by Indeed, creating frustration among employees, further compounds the existing challenges.

Hello CSM and thank you so much for taking the time to craft this incredibly thoughtful review. The pros you mention really resonate with me, and are also the things that have kept me at this company for over nine years. I, too, feel like things have been challenging this past year as Glassdoor has navigated these times of economic uncertainty; but I think what makes Glassdoor so special is that we are transparent, take feedback to heart, and we all strive to take care of our culture and each other. A few things I have found recent encouragement in: Consistent KPIs for the last 2.5 quarters with no plans to adjust them again in the near future. Significantly fewer account transitions and more book consistency. The CSM org has really robust career competencies already, but the launch of Universal Competencies (coming soon!) and all open roles now being posted in Grow-in-Glassdoor will also help folks more easily move between roles in other departments, too. In this economic environment, there are naturally fewer new open roles or movements, but I hope you’re able to still work with your manager on developing skills or seeking out opportunities for growth that will position you well for when things open up again. My door is always open if you’d like to gameplan or have additional feedback on promotions, too. CSM Spirit Week is coming back and we’ve officially announced in-person gatherings for this year! Hearing our CEO continue to commit to prioritizing these get-togethers is really refreshing. On-sites personally help me SO much with morale and connection. A continued focus on improving everyday work through things like simplification, automation, and better tooling in order to give you time back in your day or give you more time to connect about non-work things with colleagues. I personally see the CSM managers constantly ideating about ways to help their teams while also bringing a level of fun and excitement, too! I have never worked with such a caring group of leaders. So keep the feedback coming, our ears are open! Thanks again for taking the time to comment, and please always feel free to reach out to me directly if you’d like to give any more feedback. - Andrea Johnson, Director of Customer Success

Pros

- Engineers were always friendly and collaborative - Very fair compensation across the board - Flexible work schedules and vacation/holidays

Cons

- Mid-level leaders are just information conduits instead of vision/strategy drivers - Confusing and ever changing direction from the top - Engineering is a downstream partner of Product as opposed to being an equal partner - A very outdated engineering culture for both development and advancement amongst the group

Thank you for your review, I also really value how friendly and collaborative everyone in engineering is, and the healthy emphasis on work-life balance (including generous vacation time!). I think your point about some confusion from the top is not totally unwarranted, we are going through a period of big changes as we pivot into new areas, but there is always transparency from all levels on what our end goal is, and the higher level plan to get there. The Product Org is leading that change. So in Engineering, we do follow their lead on features, but in my experience, we are One Team and equal partners. Please know we will do more in the future to ensure you feel your voice is heard in Engineering. Thanks - Tony Hawke, Director of Engineering

Pros

The work being done here matters to the larger world.

Cons

Some engineering leaders care more about shipping the absolute bare minimum as fast as possible and hitting arbitrary, poorly-defined milestones than they do about listening to anyone with ideas or opinions which differ from their own. Quality is an afterthought. No time is allowed for substantive, cross-discipline collaboration. And some engineers/managers are more inclined to rewrite their coworkers' code to match their own ideas for how to do things, less inclined to accept when something isn't "perfect," and disinclined to work together to define clearer definitions of done. Yet they expect others to wrap up as soon as something is good enough and chuck it over the fence to others without regard. This is one of many double standards. Things used to be much more collaborative here. What changed? When did people stop caring what others think?

Thank you for your feedback and for leveraging our platform to provide it. I agree that quality should never be an afterthought. We should never compromise on quality. In fact, as you know We Build Quality is one of our principles and we should be doing all we can to ensure we are living by our engineering standards. To the extent you are comfortable, I would recommend leveraging one the of the many channels we have for surfacing your feedback in more detail. Those channels include engineering huddles, engineering slack, skip level meetings with people above you manager including a meeting with me. Thanks again! Hope we address these concerns soon. - Rodrigo Oliveira, Chief Technology Officer
