A Tale of Two Managers

Pros

1. Simple product (I mean that as a huge compliment) that capitalised on an emerging trend in a woefully inefficient industry. 2. Smart execs leading the company. 3. Great focus on solving for the job seeker.

Cons

My experience at Indeed truly was a tale of two managers. The first one had a clear vision and goals for the team, was emphatetic, a good communicator and valued autonomy. Unsurprisingly, they got promoted, and someone who was technically good at their job, but a poor leader was appointed to replace them. Classic case of being promoted to your level of incompetence. The second manager unfortunately was a poor leader, mistrusting and micromanaged, which created a bad atmosphere within the team. Retention soon became an issue - many new hires to this team left within weeks, I hung in for a few more months, and I gather, by the end of the year, the remaining team members had departed.

Pros

Interesting projects, good work life balance, some opportunity to travel depending on the team, fun perks for young people. Basically, if you are starting your career this is a good place to be. You'll get good experience and a decent company on your resume and then enjoy the fun perks.

Cons

If you are more experienced in your career but not quite at a director level I would strongly consider other options. Senior management lacks clear direction and vision and this is something I have heard across many groups including Marketing, HR, Finance, and Engineering. Overall, Indeed was a company that grew too fast and needed to get people in the door. Now that they are there, there is no system in place to actually achieve anything and no true vision for the future, and Senior Management continue to throw people at the problem instead of taking a step back and fixing the issues properly. Indeed is a "me too" company with no true ingenuity, stealing ideas from other tech and recruiting companies, even though they want to think of themselves as a disruption company.
