      gr8 place to work but too many poor middle managers without focus

      Pros

      great challenging work and high calibre smart co-workers. The work is great but often directionless . Often Big Bets are Off and realignments in organisations cause frustration among the employees who having worked on stuff for some time are not happy to see their work scrapped. All this because of poor communication from the middle managers to the ICs . As an organisation there is an excellent oppurtunity to learn tons of things and i would recommend it to every engineer/ p rogrammer as a very good place to work.Also benefits are good- Medical,Flex Time etc are great if you are having a family.

      Pros

      The company as a whole is great, and seems to truly care about its employees. The key is to find a group that values your work and opinions, and a manager that takes a vested interest in helping you carve your career.

      Cons

      Unfortunately, great individual contributors are often promoted into management positions, which often results in unqualified managers who don't know how, or care to help employees develop professionally.

      Pros

      Tons of smart people. Lots of groups to work for, all situated in a single campus. Each group in Microsoft has a product line often equivalent to another rival company. Great benefits esp. medical.

      Cons

      Too much butt kissing required for promotions. You better be the manager's pal. Lots of infighting between groups (especially R&D and secretive incubation groups).
