Pros

Defense sector's boom and busts are not necessarily correlated to other industries boom and bust times

Cons

Maybe stuck using very old software technologies. May not have access to the internet from your desk. Raytheon is such a huge company, it's difficult to give advice that applies to all locations and job titles... For software in El Segundo, you have to realize that Raytheon is not a software company so everything lags: technology, knowledge, compotence, opportunities, expertise, best practices, you name it. Moreover, line management lacks the skills to make organizational improvements in these areas -- really, they are just trying to stay afloat. Ratings are political. Advice I got which made sense: if you are a hard core patriot who wants to defend his country, then this could be the place for you. Otherwise, you need to weigh the tradeoffs and decide if this postion is your best choice. Also, if you were a woman in the software area, you could greatly benefit from the 'good ol gal' management structure that was created -- it was very, very strong...

Pros

Great benefits including many health insurance options, vision, dental, short/long term disability. I am fotunate to work with a lot of younger employees who make the work environment a fun place to come to every day. The 9/80 workweek which is an option at most facilities is great, having every other Friday off is the best! They will also pay for graduate courses.

Cons

I've been working at Raytheon for over a year now and not once have I received a "good job" or any type of acheivement award. The first year is all about completing your six sigma project which many departments don't take too seriously. Doesn't seem easy to get promoted but there are plenty of internal jobs to tranfer to all around the country/world.

Pros

Interesting work, strong technical staff, good facilities.

Cons

Senior management has lost technical insight into the product it makes. High turn-over rate in senior management positions, with many hired in from outside Raytheon Large space systems programs are all typically over budget and behind schedule Engineers are literally treated like galley slaves in order to complete these programs Over-reliance on process. Too many process control statements. Nobody knows what they mean or how to apply them Line management quality has been poor. Line management merely provides body shop function Engineers are pigeon-holed as to what they are "experts" at. Legacy-Hughes retirement program has a strange warping effect. Many bitter senior staff hang on until they qualify for retirement then quit when they can.
