Cons

The idea of working at Raytheon turned out to be much better than actually working there. I believe it to be a great company in theory with people that really do want to make it a conducive work environment, but with such a large company growing so fast they are in way over there heads. There is waste in money and effort at every corner. If the thought of working on a project where you will in inherit 10 years of technical debt and be forced to contribute to that technical debt furthermore, this might just be the place for you. If you will be put on a new project, don't fall for the notion that there will be a clean slate and therefore a new direction that you will be able to help take a product/project. There rarely is a rev. 0 at a company this size thus making it that more critical that projects have followed processes and were held to certain software requirements. The drivers of almost all of the larger or newer projects are engineers with h/w backgrounds even though all of the backend work will be software and this can lead to many problems. Overall as a software engineer with experience at multiple companies if your work and overall quality of the work you do is of importance, I would avoid this company if you have other options. For engineers passionate about their work these types of things will slowly eat away at you.

Pros

10.5% pension People are great (especially some of the developers) Gloucester location is reasonably good and has free parking (but also there is a con where there is not enough spaces to park for all employees) Good sized company Free snacks (biscuits, fruit and drinks)

Cons

I agree with a lot of the previous comments, favourites will go far and those who know how to play the system within the organisation You are micro managed and not trusted. On a weekly basis required to provide what you did, risks and opportunities to higher management, which is a total waste of time as nothing is done and is irrelevant. Even if you got nothing to report you are expected to write something. Most software engineers feel its a waste of time but management don't listen They require bums on seats (seat warmers) Mon - Thur (8.30 - 5.30). Although can finish early on a Friday (8.30 - 1.30). There is flexibility for those that are liked and different rules apply to other individuals. Old infrastructure and still uses Lotus Notes for email Lack of diversity High number of people leaving, although junior staff with clearance are kept and paid more when threaten to leave Management are bullies. As per above parking is an issue (the extra parking that was available has been lost to another company close by as Raytheon were not quick to lease these spaces from the landlord), and has got worse.
