Terrible culture

Business Outlook

Pros

* Flexible hours * Paid overtime

Cons

* Toxic, political culture that prioritizes protecting the status quo over productivity and quality * Engineers are micromanaged and have very little independence, responsibility or creative freedom. The only expectation of engineers is that they write code based on a given specification; they have minimal involvement with conceptual and design decisions. * Development is slowed by an immense amount of technical debt; no emphasis on following industry norms or best practices; * Promotions are scarce and a matter of time rather than merit * Upper management seem apathetic towards employee comfort and morale; engineers are not given adequate equipment * Overtime is expected * Real, lasting change seems impossible due to the overwhelming levels of middle-management * Working in a classified environment means lots of restrictions

Pros

Flexible work schedule. Smart people. Chill atomosphere. Lead gave independence for working hours as long as it overlapped with the general work hours. Scrum began to be adopted and helped identify improvements in development processed. Work was generally interesting and there was plenty of resources to work on projects and mentor you.

Cons

The location was dependent on new contracts to be won in order have new work, sometimes there are gaps in new contracts which could result in busy-work until the next contract is obtained.

Great Company

Pros

- Competitive salaries and benefit - Flexible schedules (9/80 schedule is 'standard') - Great people and the opportunity to learn from folks considered industry experts - Interesting, innovative work. - As anywhere, there are times you'll need to work overtime but the company really tries to keep you close to a 40hr a week schedule and, unlike many places, they do provide comp-time or overtime pay.

Cons

May or may not be a con depending on how you feel about working for a defense contractor: There is a high probability that you are going to be building something that is designed to kill people. That may seem harsh, but this is the facts. Personally I look at as I'm building equipment that will help protect our troops and freedoms, but however you feel about it, you are going to have to come to terms with it, best you do so before you start. The second con: Many things you do are going to be classified which means A: you can't really talk about it and (more importantly to me) B: there is a lot of red tape to deal with. You will spend some time waiting for this, that or the other piece of paperwork to be processed so that you can actually start doing your work. Personally I think these are minor issues to deal with vs the pros of working for a company that actually seems to care about their employees but that is very much a matter of perspective, everyone is going to have to make their own call.
