Pros

There is potential to do useful and challenging work at SAIC. Your particular experience will depend on your particular boss and contract. Top management wants to do the right thing by improving conditions for employees. They initiated this with a couple employee surveys in the last year or two, with results sent to local managers to improve the working environment. I suspect that in some cases, the local managers used the results to improve the environment for the workers. In my own experience, it seemed like the local manager(s) read the results, then white-washed the deficiencies and used the positives to justify their own performance.

Cons

Tend to manage contract paperwork. The actual work is contracted out to subcontractors. If work is in short supply, some managers will check with other local divisions to get coverage. Others may not do anything outside their own group, which was my experience. There are huge opportunities at SAIC, but it your are not in Virginia, those may be far away from home. At times, there is competition between divisions that prevents open communication to win contracts. This competition can lead to discouragement to communicate to empoyees of another division. It is a large company with large company issues and characteristics.

Pros

Some of the Benefits are not bad.

Cons

Lot of Nepotism. Many, Many Sisters, Brothers, Mothers, Daughters, Cousins, etc., all working together in the same office. There is a lot of favortism also. Not a very friendly place if you are a new employee. You are not even introduced to your fellow workers. Seems to look down their noses if you are not in the higher paying position that some employees are. Some managers let their employees do their jobs with no extra benefits, other than the false pretense that they are important. But these people can and are replaced at the drop of the hat, so to speak.

Pros

SAIC is a large company; so there is plenty of opportunity for lateral moves if other opportunities present themselves. I have not executed a transfer of this sort myself, but I manage an employee sho has, and his experience indicates that organizations are not hostile to intra-company moves. Opening the company intranet and reviewing the "Careers" page where job opportunities are listed always reveals a considerable list of available positions. Knowing that the company has enough work to solicit employees is a nice comfort, particularly during economically difficult times like now.

Cons

Being a large company can also work against the employee experience as well. For example, there can be a large gap perceived between *senior* senior management and the project-level employee.
