Pros

- Good work/life balance - Started out as a fun atmosphere to work - Not too much pressure to deliver on deadlines (at least in our group) - Free lunch and snacks

Cons

- Knee jerk reactions by management when their teams are on focus - Old bureaucratic way of thinking. - Focus on their proprietary technologies like ABAP and an almost vehement opposition of open source software (BOBJ acquisition is changing a few things here) - Management does not trust what the developers and technology groups are doing. This results in too many governance organizations and it takes forever to make decisions. - You will find quite a number of architects who actually turn out to be architecture astronauts.

Pros

Even though a victim of the economic downturn, I have no general ill will towards SAP. This was a good company to work for. There was allot of energy and they take care of their employees. Benefits are very good, including a very reasonable severance. Decisions may be short sighted, as with most publicly held companies these days, but they do tend to take care of their people.

Cons

I question the long term viability of targeting many of their most senior sales engineers for staff reduction. They have mandated that allot of intellectual property walk out the door. It will likely prove costly in the long run.
