      Serve for the experience, but tough to make it a career

      Pros

      The best things about Army service are: pride in mission accomplishment, responsibility early in career, education benefits, and getting to work with / lead lots of different people. The benefits are pretty good, but salary and responsibility begin to stagnate right after the senior captain level. The lessons, discipline and work ethic learned set you up for furture success.

      Cons

      long deployments, little freedom to change positions (bosses) if unsatisfied; there is little to do in the Army that will keep you in the states for more than a year, so be prepared to spend most of your time in this service either preparing to deploy, deployed or just getting back- all difficult in their own ways.

      Pros

      In a very unstable economy, the Army is a guaranteed steady source of income, where you don't have to worry about the possibility of losing your job at a moment's notice. While the system is not perfect, the Army does provide valuable services, such as on base housing, health insurance and life insurance. There also many on-base programs designed to help Soldiers and their families with a variety of issues - child care, spousal employment, finances, religious support and much more. Also, the G.I. Bill is there for all Soldiers, so everyone has the opportunity to get a college education.

      Cons

      Anyone and everyone can and will act as your boss, whether they even know what is going on or not. You are trapped in your job, no matter what. This isn't a job where if you decide you don't like it or it's not going to work, you can just put in your two weeks' notice. You sign your life away to the government in a contract that is almost unbreakable. Your personal life is no longer personal. The Army can be involved in almost everything you do, and there are a lot more rules than in the civilian world, and you will be punished for breaking them.

      Pros

      The Army has opened up so many doors of opportunity for me. I have been able to travel all over the world and meet all kinds of people. The Army pays my room and board as well as all my medical bills! It is not hard being a soldier in the Army - you just have to do what your told to the best of your ability. Respect those superior to you. Live by the Army Values. I am proud to serve my country. I have never regretted enlisting in the Army a day in my career and I never will - even through some of the rough times - and yes, you will have them, but those are what make you a better soldier.

      Cons

      Downsides of the Army? There aren't many. If there are they are petty things that don't really matter too much. The deployments can be long and tough and they can take a toll on you, not just physically but mentally and emotionally. It's easy to get frustrated but most of the time you have to grin and bear it.
