Pros

As a 10yr employee, its hard to make a decision to leave your company. There are OK benefits (insurance, vacation, sick pay, stock options, etc.) and store level its great (employees and management) but the corporate side of the business is what drove me to search the job postings.

Cons

A new employee might not notice anything wrong with Walgreens, but for me I am sick of having everything cut to save corporate money. I understand they need to continue to make profit and that was near impossible in the recession, but Walgreens managed it! We all took the cuts in stride, knowing this corporation needed to cut corners to make their money. Makes sense. After a few years, I hoped all the cuts would stop, or even a few reversed. But no, the cuts continue. Walgreens continually asks for more and more with less and less. They have cut hours, positions, bonuses, incentives & contests, even products from the shelves. And through all the cuts they ask for more sales, customers, compliments ALL OF IT! I have no problem serving my customers with a smile and spending time helping them but this is near impossible with the hours and amount of people we have running the store at one time. The pharmacy is the worst. In some of the slower stores a pharmacist works ALONE with no tech help. In a rush, how is this pharmacist going to provide A+ customer service and patient interactions. The customers HAVE noticed, and I believe the business WILL suffer because of this. This was NEVER a problem about 3-4 years ago. Over the years I have slowly started to realize that although we are heading out of the "recession" Walgreens has NO plans on putting back into the stores what they took out. This causes me to really resent my place of work and plan on finding somewhere new.

Pros

Compensation. Technological advancements. Adequate vacation / sick day relief from float team.

Cons

Inadequately staffed. Insanely busy. Upper management is unresponsive to real world needs, they will simply give you the runaround. The goals they "expect" you to achieve are completely unattainable and unrealistic given these circumstances. Over the past 3 years they have added numerous tasks (flu shots, blood pressure screening, cholesterol testing, diabetes monitoring, medication therapy management)......but have actually decreased hours! How does this make sense? There's an excellent chance you won't receive lunches or even have enough time for so much as a bathroom break. The telephones are often left unanswered for long periods of time, simply because there isn't enough help to answer them. The company makes zero effort in retaining top technician talent......who usually leave after realizing they can make more money waiting tables. 3 percent 401K match is low compared to competitors, and health benefits continues to erode every year. I would not recommend working for this company. Even getting your prescriptions filled as a customer may prove challenging seeing how overwhelmed most stores currently are.
