I applied in-person. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at ALDI (Fort Worth, TX) in Jun 2015
Interview
Multi step process. First you turn in an application during a specific store's hiring event. If they call you in for an interview it will be with a District Manager. The first interview lasted about fifteen minutes. They will ask you basic questions: tell me about your last job, what did you do, why did you leave, college, availability, etc. They explained to me that this is a multi step process and the first interview is supposed to be casual. They told me that honest is a premium at Aldi and anything I tell them will be investigated during the next step of the process and if they find that I had mislead them during my interview my employment may not be considered. They said that after a background check a drug test will occur. Depending on the position you are applying for they may ask for a hair sample test. They explained that failing a hair follicle drug test may not automatically disqualify you for employment it depends on what the test says, and he gave me an opportunity to tell them if I had used drugs during the last year or two.

Interview
First I called the store then I went in and picked up application. Filled it out and returned it later that week and was told I'd be notified as soon as it was looked over and would be notified.
I applied in-person. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at ALDI (Albany, NY) in May 2015
Interview
Brought a completed application to a "hiring event" they advertised. This honestly wasn't really an event, I had to ask the cashier where a manager was since they weren't out in the open. I met the DM who was pretty friendly, he took my application and asked me a few short questions from a form he had then told me they would call everyone by next friday. I did receive a followup call a few days later for an interview with the DM. I did that interview which was conducted while walking around the store and backroom. I then received another call to do another interview this time with the store manager. That interview went well and was conducted the same way, by walking around the store. The store manager expressed that he has no hiring or firing power but his recommendation on an applicant goes a long way with the DM who has the hiring power. Around a week later I got a call saying that I have the job long as a drug test and backround check come back fine.
That was the entire process, took around a month.
