I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Dollar General (Daytona Beach, FL) in Aug 2015
Interview
I applied online for a posted position of "Store manager". Filled out the application, uploaded my resume, and within about a week I received a call from a district manager. He asked me a few question about my previous experience and why I left my last job, a few other basic questions, and then asked me if I'd like to meet for an in-person interview a few days later.
I met the DM at a local store location. The interview took place in what appeared to be a small room that doubled as an office. As he began the interview, he said I see you've applied for the "Store Manager CANDIDATE" position...at which time I asked him to explain how that was different than the Store Manager position I had actually applied for. He explained that it was basically an hourly position in which potential store manager candidates were placed into, until a store manager position opened up. This was not what I applied for, but I continued with the interview to see if I could get more info. I wouldn't normally discuss pay expectations in a first interview, unless asked, but I had to ask what the hourly rate was. It didn't sound promising. I still expressed interest and at the end of the interview (which really wasn't a formal interview of any kind, more like a "This is what the general manager of a Dollar General does, do you want to do it"? session. After I had asked my questions, he asked me what I thought, and said I was interested pending what the hourly rate would be during my "candidacy" period. He said he would need to partner with his Regional Manager on a rate and would get back to me very soon, telling me he would call me within 2 days and said he looked forward to talking with me. That was the last I heard from him. I left feeling like the whole interview process, and possibly the operation was unprofessional, and wasn't disappointed that he never called me back in a way.
I applied in-person. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Dollar General (Oklahoma City, OK) in Aug 2015
Interview
Seven interviews first with the district manager from the district I applied for then the region manager then three more with the DM then another follow up with the DM who invited the neighboring district manager to the interview who asked questions like are you gay 9 times he asked me if I would pass a drug test when I told him the truth that I have never done any illegal substance in my life he stated that he didn't believe that. The interview process was all around uncomfortable and many of the questions asked are not allowed by law to be asked in an interview. Even after offering me the job I refused to take it.
Interview questions [2]
Question 1
How many store does dollar general open in a week.
Interview was pretty easy. Interview was like most other interviews and questions. The person conducting the interview kept telling me that it would be the hardest job I would ever do and they were right. I am not afraid of work but it was very difficult to find associates who wanted to work and not steal from the store. Most could not even pass a background check. Therefore, management would have to pick up the extra hours, with no extra pay due to being salary, in order to complete tasks that needed to get done.
