Aspiring to have a culture of hustle, without the upside of ownership

Pros

Exceptionally bright and committed colleagues across many functions A well-articulated remote work policy Ambitious mission with real market relevance

Cons

Camunda aspires to operate with the intensity and pace of a high-growth startup. That in itself isn’t problematic — many companies pursue that model. The issue is that it asks employees to behave like founders without offering the corresponding rewards or trust. Long hours, blurred boundaries, and a sense of constant urgency are clearly where the leadership wants to take the culture. Yet equity — the very thing that justifies that level of commitment in most startups — is thinly distributed, and for most, inconsequential. Employees are often told to “own” their work, have work life integration, not work life balance, take initiative, and operate with autonomy. In practice, strategic decisions are centralized, upward feedback is filtered, and true ownership — meaningful ownership of the company — is reserved for a select few.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear that you value the ambition of our mission, our colleagues, and the clarity around our remote work model. Our total reward team continually evaluates the market to provide a competitive Total Rewards package, understanding that not all employees value each component equally. Pros

Once-in-a-lifetime colleagues (what’s left of them) A mission that could have changed the world It used to be the kind of company you told your friends you were proud to work at

Cons

"Lean Camunda" wasn’t a transformation — it was a cultural execution. Leadership dropped it overnight with no warning, no respect, and no real plan. The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) is wildly incompetent and inexperienced— totally lost on how to scale a real company without torching its soul. SLT preach "low ego leadership" publicly and act like control-obsessed tyrants behind closed doors. Leadership is making one reckless decision after another — including the absurd move to replace a perfectly good full-time CMO with a fractional CMO who works 3 days a week. Seriously? In what world does that signal stability and long-term thinking? Camundi haven't just lose faith — they've lost trust, loyalty, and hope. The mass exit has already started. The Board either needs to clean house or accept that Camunda will soon be nothing more than a sad case study in leadership failure.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. While this is tough to read, we understand that it reflects deep frustration and disappointment. We acknowledge that performance, feedback, and trust in leadership are deeply personal topics that can significantly shape someone’s experience at Camunda. The recent changes we’ve made, including the shift toward a leaner operating model were driven by the need to adapt to our current reality and to position Camunda for long-term sustainability. We acknowledge that these recent changes have been significant and, for some, deeply unsettling. Feedback like yours makes it clear that the way we navigated those changes hasn’t felt transparent or steady enough, and that trust in leadership has been shaken. That’s something we take seriously. Leadership is listening, even when the feedback is tough and working toward ensuring that Camunda remains a place people can feel proud to be part of. We remain committed to Camunda’s mission and to evolving in a way that honors the people that brought us here.

Pros

These are genuinely motivated people who show up each day motivated to do great work. The remote-first setup, good benefits, and high-growth market give Camunda a great platform to build a compelling place to work. Camunda operates in a fast-growing market with no dominant player. The opportunity is very real.

Cons

Camunda was once a standout company with a collaborative, low-ego culture, full of people genuinely excited to build something meaningful. Unfortunately, that version of Camunda has become harder and harder to recognize. I’m sharing this review to bring transparency to what many employees have been experiencing, in hopes it helps both future candidates and current colleagues who may be feeling the same but don’t feel safe speaking up as trust has been systematically eroded away. I also hope it leads to meaningful change, though if the last six months are any indication, it may unfortunately fall on deaf ears. Camunda continues to generate bold ideas, but struggles deeply with execution. Strategy shifts frequently - not in a way that suggests thoughtful evolution, but more like scrambling to deploy something that was thought up over a weekend. Critical product releases are also delayed, and instead of leading the category, it feels like you’re constantly playing catchup with technology. Cross-functional collaboration has also become increasingly difficult and to be honest slowly trended towards being non-existent. Much of that stems from the influence of a recently promoted executive who has introduced a toxic dynamic across teams. Their leadership style is marked by emotional volatility, behind-the-scenes undermining, and retaliatory behavior which has been discussed in other reviews for good reason. It has created a culture of fear and performative alignment, where people spend more time managing optics than solving problems. When one person in a senior role causes this much damage and nothing changes, it sends a clear message about what behavior is tolerated. Trust across functions is eroding, and morale has taken a hit. It’s harder to do good work when motivations aren’t clear, and when the ability to innovate is stifled. There are still great people at Camunda but more and more of them are leaving or disengaging while the company has chosen to turn a blind eye, going as far as removing all notifications on when one of your colleagues has left the business. There’s also growing uncertainty about the company’s long-term focus. Increasingly, it feels like short-term positioning and stakeholder optics are taking precedence over the original mission.

We recognize how difficult it can be to voice experiences like this, and we want to create space for honest conversations. Allegations about toxic behavior or leadership conduct are deeply concerning. This kind of behavior is not in line with our values, and one that we would very much like to address. Unfortunately, anonymous feedback on external platforms like Glassdoor makes it difficult to investigate or resolve. We are here to listen and we encourage you to use our internal channels or to reach out to anyone from the People team that you trust for a confidential conversation. Raising concerns directly allows us to take meaningful action needed to ensure a respectful and supportive environment for everyone.
