Pros

Small environment allowing great exposure to other businesses and groups. More hands-on opportunities given the smaller structure of groups.

Cons

Lack of clear vision from senior management. Lack of communication by senior management. Extremely more red tape than at a large bulge bracket firm.

Pros

Friendly and relatively relaxed investment banking environment. No culture of long hours (practically 9-5). Pockets of excellence in IT and e-commerce, particularly FX and FI.

Cons

Generally a large degree of ill feeling amongst former Dresdner Kleinwort employees, and to a lesser degree amongst general employees, regarding the mismanagement of, and bad faith shown during, the merger. Difficulty retaining and hiring the best talent in this atmosphere. Far too much bureaucracy.

Pros

Work life balance: there is little or no need to stay late, as things are completed at Commerzbank's pace irrespective of who the client is. Staying late won't be rewarded, so inherent culture (understandably) is that people don't Very unlikely that you will get laid off (unless there is a macro event such as the Dresdner takeover)

Cons

Deeply, deeply bureacratic, hierarchical and institutionally set up so that employees are not incentivised to stick their necks out for the sake of good business opportunities. There is little or no point in non-German business areas and the prevailing culture is one where juniors are conditioned to assume that their superiors will take a negative view of new ideas, hence themselves also take a negative view. This is not a place to further your career
