Horrible company to work for

Pros

You can choose your own work schedule, take any time off that you want, and can move up with the company fairly quick.

Cons

The pay is horrible for all of the duties they expect. You are alone in the store a lot of the time. If you aren’t buddies with the DM you won’t get higher positions. They allow managers to hire people in at higher pay than people that have worked there for years make. The yearly raises are a joke. As a Store Manager, you are required to work 6 days a week. Employees never get to enjoy their days off because they’re constantly getting called in to work. The company keeps adding more duties, while not increasing the hours allotted in your weekly schedule. Plus during the pandemic, while every essential employee company was paying their employees hazard pay or bonuses, Dollar General slapped their employees in the face with a joke of 1 bonus for about $200 the whole pandemic. ASM’s are required do the just as much work as the SM (if not more) but the SM is the only one who receives quarterly bonuses.

Pros

Company car, not much else.

Cons

Do your homework if you're considering a job here. There is review after review about how bad it is to work here. As a DM you are expected to work "24-7". Store teams are not given enough labor and if stores get behind, DM's are expected to cover the slack. Sales are higher than ever and labor hours are less than ever even though tasks have improved. Unsafe working conditions, stores in disrepair without basic repairs. Lowest wages make hiring good employees impossible - DG hires people who can't get hired anywhere else. No focus on talent only on checking the box. Region Directors are micro-managers, everything is a 911 with daily roll ups. Promises of career advancement but its all based on who you know.

Pros

If you don't care about your safety, salary isn't bad & store manager opportunities are frequent due to high turnover. Company is profitable. Stockholders get a good return on investment. Good merchandising program

Cons

Often times one employee working solo; making stores a shoplifting and robbery magnet. High shrink. Self insured for work comp because of bad safety record. Often only 1 employee in store. Business model unlikely to change because of company profitability.
