Pros

The line level employees were great to work with, most were hard working decent people to be around.

Cons

Unrealistic expectations of store managers. This company will work you to death, always expecting more, probably why 8 out of 10 store managers do not make it a year. I was the 6th store manager in the last 18 months, and had three district managers in my first 6 months quit. This company will take away your life and expect you to live and breathe dollar general. It's funny, so many store managers are brain washed and don't see what's happening to them as their life is given to this company with no appreciation. They boast of being the largest small box retailer in the world, too bad it's built on breaking the backs of the managers. Most store managers in my district worked 70-80 hours a week, and oh, don't forget the mandatory 6 day work week, which will always include the weekends and holidays. This company is a joke to work for at the store management level, they simply do not care. Become a store manager and try taking your vacation days, good luck with that. Sick, too bad. Death in the family, sorry. Earned vacation time, oops, not until your store is perfect....which it never will be based on the minimal amont of payroll dollars you're allocated...of course unless you do it yourself...since you're salaried. I would never, ever reccomend this company to anyone who is serious about a store management position, there is way better out there. You will find yourself unloading trucks, stocking shelves, cashiering, mopping floors and doing everything else yourself because you're the only one in the store for many hours during the day. Shoplifters love this place because of the limited floor coverage since the only one in the store is the store manager, and he or she is busy with a long line at the register. The upper management tries to intimidate you, always pushing you because "visitors" are coming, which never show. This place is a joke folks, take a store management job and you'll see how true the above statements are. It's great if you want to lose weight though, since it's impossible to stop for 15 minutes to eat each day. Worst job ever. Beware, you've been warned.

Pros

ok benefits but not worth the time you spend in the store

Cons

over worked and underpaid, stores generate enough money to have more employees then just a few, so the work load is left to the managers. and then you end up working about 70 hrs a week

Pros

Needing a job in a pinch. If you are looking for just a place to work until you find a job Dollar General is bearable.

Cons

The general manager and assistant manager have no communication between the two. I was constantly being rudely corrected by one or the other for doing things the wrong way. I was always told to use one policy or way of doing something by the general manager and another way of doing the same tasks by the assistant. That made every employee confused and upset on a daily basis.
