Pros

Our store has a very hardworking manger, although sometimes unfair. We have a nice, neat, clean store, and we're very polite to our customers. I work with nice, fun people, and we usually get our truck put up quickly. The quality of products are good, which makes you feel good about selling them. Most of our regular customers are very nice and well mannered. Every once in a while, we get "employee coupons" that will offer 10%-25% off of everything in the store on a certain day, however, this does not make up for lack of employee discount.

Cons

The pay is very low for the amount of work that you do. Cashiers are expected to man the register, recover the first half of the store, clean, and stock, all in one shift. This can be very hard to do all by yourself, especially when the store is very busy. I've almost been at DG for a year, have worked very hard, and have great attendance, and have still not received a raise. I found out not long ago I would be getting a raise on my 1 year hire date, but it's only a quarter. That's so unfair! How can anyone live off of that? Especially after putting in much time and dedication into their job. Cashiers and store managers work the hardest, while assistant managers/3rd keys have it much easier. I feel like I work very hard without much praise or thanks. I also feel like I'm not appreciated much. Employee benefits are not good, and I want to move up into a higher position, but haven't been given much opportunity. My manager unfairly does the schedules, and I'm currently only getting 20 hours a week and always working weekends, while everyone else gets one day of the weekend off. No employee discount is very unfair! Dollar General isn't a bad place to work, but the employee treatment really needs to be moved up a notch! Also, cashiers need to be allowed to do voids without making all customers wait in line while you have to go find the MOD to do a simple void! Very irritating. Breaks are very unfair as well. At our store, you only get a break if you work 7+ hours, and even then it's only 30 minutes. If working 4-6 hours, a 15 minute break should be granted.

Pros

Being able to build your own team members, and getting to know the customers on a daily basis, inside the store becomes your family.

Cons

The only down side is not feeling good about the job you have done for the Company because you are never thanked for it.
