Pros

Great coworkers Good trainers for the most part Great networking opportunities Access to entry level jobs at blue chip companies Good benefits You can leave FDM without penalty if you don't get placed in 90 days after signing-off

Cons

Minimum wage during training, low pay for the first two years Accommodations for trainees outside the NYC area are not great Despite FDM saying that a technical background isn't necessary, it is highly recommended you have a finance/business/math/stats background I was in the BI Stream at the NY Academy located at Wall Street which lasted for around 10 weeks. The stream itself was not up to my expectation overall. Much of the course material was learned through self-studying and it was incredibly tedious. I didn't learn much after the Excel, SQL, and finance modules. The technologies that are taught during the training also don't seem to align with what clients want, for example many clients wanted trainees to have Tableau experience but that was not taught during the stream. There's no guarantee that you will be placed by the end of your training. In terms of the number of interview opportunities you get, it really depends on the market as client demand does seem to be seasonal. I only got 3 interviews total before I signed-off and some of my colleagues only had one interview, which is way lower than what is the average. The interviews you get may not be relevant whatsoever to your current stream, for example if you were training in the BI/Data Analyst stream, you might get interviews for a project manager or application support role. If you do not get placed after signing-off, FDM will fly you back. You will still get interview opportunities supposedly but it is inconvenient for both parties. You definitely want to get placed before you sign off if you don't live in the area.

Pros

Your not unemployed Many companies we got placed with were so unimpressed by FDM and the support they provided to grads they tended to sympathise with us and motivated us to leave FDM

Cons

The process is so draining no pay till you get on site and your not even guaranteed a role in your stream. I came in on one stream and got placed as a business analyst because the account manager literally lied to a bunch of us just to get us on site HR was non-existent. No career progression. Not worth it, regret the whole experience. everyone I know left as soon as they finished their second year and we all were all so relieved to get out.

FDM Group Response

I’m very sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your experience with FDM and especially that you didn’t feel supported throughout your journey. We have several initiatives set up to support our people including consultant peer support, mentoring, relationship managers and access to a large library of online training resources, as well as HR . Clearly, the support available wasn’t something you were aware of and this is something I want to investigate further. With regards to the role you were placed in, during the training you receive at the academy you will be taught to have a broad skill set and equipped with many transferable skills. We want to provide as many options to our people as possible and so when an opportunity arises that they may be suitable for, they will be given that chance to interview with the client. Honesty and transparency is something we value highly and I am very concerned that you feel you’ve been lied to. I appreciate that you have now left FDM but there are many points you raise in your review that I would like the opportunity to discuss in more detail with you. If you are happy to have this discussion with me please email me at andy.brown@fdmgroup.com

Pros

• It is a good opportunity for recent graduates to start their IT career if unable to get a job. • They provide 3 to 4 months of fast paced training and certifications based on the stream selected. Trainers have good knowledge and are very supportive. During the training, you get paid minimum wage (which was not the case when I joined). • You get opportunity to work with one of the top 5 banks in Canada. • If not placed with a client within 3 months of your training, you are free to leave FDM. • 2 years of employment guarantee: This can be both pro and con. Sometimes if you get beached, it might take longer time to join another client. But, I have seen some of them who were beached and joined another client in a month. • You have higher chances of joining the client that you are working with at the end of your contract. FDM encourages you to join the client but, you have the option to continue with FDM, join the client or go on your own. • I have always received good support and timely responses from the trainers, HR and account managers.

Cons

• Pay is lower than the market rate. • After training, you may not get to work on the same technology as you were trained and usually clients don't provide training. Sometimes you don’t even get a clear job description until you talk to the interviewer or actually start working with the client. • You are bound to work with them for 2 years. If you quit before your 2 year contract ends, you will have to pay $30K CAD.
