Don't Let the Brand Name Fool You!

Pros

The "prestige" associated with the H&M brand within the fashion industry. The compensation is above what most other retailers are willing to pay. Pretty good benefits. The 25% discount is good if you like H&M clothing.

Cons

The work environment is horrible. Morale at most stores is consistently low (I travel to different stores quite often) and store management is often times burnt out. There is an unreasonable expectation when it comes to the workload. Everybody is expected to constantly push for positive results, an expectation most employers have, but with H&M the expectation is tenfold. The company has eliminated quite a few positions without notice, demoted people without notice, all in an effort to save money. There is an almost cult-like mentality when it comes to senior management: you're either 110% H&M or we'll find a way to get rid of you. Job security is nonexistent. It's easy to lose your job with this company.

Pros

The pros are definitely a higher pay than most retailers are willing to pay, which includes an excellent benefits package.

Cons

Most of the other managers I met have been in their position for 5+ years. It's the same routine day in and day out. There is no room for creativity, opinions or outside experience.

Pros

Many opportunities are offered. Many chances to travel to store openings all over the world. People listen to your ideas and you are very respected. You are given many responsibilities and therefore, H&M gives you a chance to grow in your career.

Cons

When you are a manager, therefore exempt, you are expected to work long hours (I have worked a 23.5 hour day!) especially during store openings, with little or no time off. The salaries are not very competitive but the vacation times are acceptable. (3 weeks after 3 years)
