Pros

Competitive pay which is automatically raised by 3-4% each year. Challenging product.

Cons

All in all, a lot of broken promises, bureaucracy, dysfunctional management and cynicism. Very bare-minimum time off. Paternity leave 5 days (excuse me?) Absolutely no remote work allowed. Period. You should be there, like a slave, even if you just sit at your office debugging. Ridiculous review cycle, which some managers do not follow. Cult of seniority. You are expected to do what you are told by higher-ups (de-facto; on paper Mathworks is a democracy where in fact it is a pure autocracy). Zero promotions. No feedback is heard. Everybody is pretty stuck up, nobody cracks jokes! Oh yes, CEO's idol is Jim Collins - he idolizes Mr. Collins, which quite discredits him in my eyes.

Pros

As the company was growing it was a great place to work. Now, it is a monopoly that operates like one in a vacuum. The benefits are great if you can tolerate the culture.

Cons

The owner is a total control freak that is awkward with people. He never talks to customers and rarely appreciates any feedback from employees. The business model is 10 years out-dated. Every decision has to be made by the owner or CFO without any outside advice. What company that is $800 million refuses to have an outside board? Ask yourself why you haven't heard of a 30 year old software company with 3500 people. Sales people are having their compensation cut and managers are expected to do what they're told. If something is challenged - you are a pariah. The culture is miserable, people could do much better. There are a handful of people that have made it financially, otherwise everybody else should expect to be underpaid.

Pros

Work with smart people Challenging, exciting work that varies day to day Many opportunists to get "training" You do not have to decide on a career until after you work here for a while, so there is flexibility Career opportunities, though not as many as advertised during the hiring process, they are still there.

Cons

Management for the "Engineering Development Group" should not be managing a development group. They are basically technical support managers, and generally good at that, but do not have any clear mandate to focus at all on the non-support side of this group. This is clear as they continually make decisions that sacrifice engineers long term career development at MathWorks for short term technical support goals. The work culture of the Engineering Development Group is not in line with the principles and values of the rest of the company. The dual demand for our time coupled homework assignments (yes, there is homework in EDG) routinely make working after work hours or on the weekends necessary. The common complaint for this position is simply that the 50/50 support/project time split that is repeated all throughout the hiring process and at career fairs is simply not true. 70/30 is more accurate.
