Being an Engineer at The MathWorks

- A lot of opportunities for technical and personal growth - Challenging engineering environment - Strong company ethnics and great culture within the company - Great benefits and good compensation package - Still relatively small and private company with all the benefits of being that

Cons

MathWorks is first and foremost the software company. Most of the engineering work within the company is in the support of sales and technical consulting. If you're looking to get down and dirty with hardware and work on something that will actually fly or float or drive, etc. this might not be the best company to work for.

- Intelligent, considerate, and interesting co-workers - We make products that contribute significantly to furthering science and technology - A lot of encouragement and support for having a healthy home-work life balance - Lots of great benefits - Core values I feel good about supporting - A lot of opportunities to have a good laugh, and sometimes a meal, with my co-workers

Cons

- We have a very strong internal culture: if you don't fit with it, you'll probably end up leaving quickly - Change is slow: learning to wait was hard at first, but I've come to appreciate it, because I feel like I have space to take the time to do things thoroughly. It can still be frustrating at times, but on balance it is probably wise in most cases. - Being required to move my office so often - Working on non-Windows OS's can often be frustrating: the internal systems really aren't designed for it

Cons

The pay is not great. I believe MathWorks is having a tough time thinking of itself as a s/w company w.r.t pay.
