Pros

A great place to: - grow in your skills. There are multiple tech stacks used across the company so there is an opportunity to always be learning something new. - have a family. The parental leave policy is incredibly generous. - level up in your "soft skills." Having thoughtful, respectful debate is a skill that is built. Moz recognizes this and provides for employees to develop this skill. - have flexible working arrangements. Moz has worked at developing and supporting their ability for workers to work remotely. A secondary benefit of this is that teams also get good at documenting decisions and architectures so that the amount of "tribal knowledge" is usually decreasing.

Cons

- promotion path was murky. It took months of asking my manager "what do I need to do in order to get promoted?" in order to get an actionable answer. - product vision was lacking. I spent a significant amount of time during my last year working on features that never made it in front of customers or working on bugs. It was difficult to find things to work on that would help grow our customer base. This did start to change during the end of my time there.

Good culture, but an uncertain future

Pros

The legend about the good culture is true, even though it is now experiencing an existential crisis after massive layoffs in August. The company really does want you to have a happy life in the office and outside of work. So many people are spurred to take interesting vacations because you have to take vacation to get the $3,000 yearly bonus that can only be spent on vacation activities! HR knows that the layoff has had an impact on morale, and they are trying their best to help the company through the shell shock of such a massive wound. I'm really rooting for them to succeed.

Cons

- After the layoff, the company scaled back its ambitions and took a more defensive posture that emphasizes maintenance and incremental improvement of the existing flagship product. - After the layoff, the office feels deflated and quiet, way too large for the reduced workforce. - After the layoff, many of the office perks have been cut. - 401k match is not immediate (it has to vest starting after one year) - No annual bonus structure

Moz Response

Hi -- I appreciate your thoughtful review. We are very proud of the culture we have fostered at Moz and we are working hard to build on the parts that have made Moz a special place. We have come a long way since this summer and we still have work to do. I am pleased that we have been able to continue with almost all of the benefits and perks, including Paid PAID vacation (which you mentioned). We recently asked Mozzers for feedback on how they are feeling about Moz and our future. We received some excellent, actionable feedback and are working hard to re-establish trust and belief across the company. Thanks for rooting for us, it means a lot!
