Pros

Depending on your BU and site budget, SAIC offers training and educational opportunities. In fact, you'll find that many employed by SAIC have a great deal of certifications. The fact that these same employees have no real-world experience doesn't seem to bother the customers of SAIC, though it makes for a challenging work day for others.

Cons

If you don't work at a client site, you have little to no opportunity as far as training or education or career advancement for that matter. Benefits leave a great deal to be desired. The site I work at is about ten years behind on technological advances, yet no one understands this based on the fact that they have been with SAIC for the last ten years. Also, the only qualification(s) needed to become SAIC management concern former military service and the ability to sit at a desk and stare into a computer screen (also, it is preferred though not required that you know your basic shapes and can read above a second grade level). If you meet these requirements, you are golden.

Pros

It's a large company with many opportunities when first starting out. Has many different locations around the United States and overseas.

Cons

Very difficult to move to different contracts. Business units are stove piped making it difficult to learn what other sectors do. No sick leave, you have to use PTO if you are sick. Doesn't offer all federal holidays.

Pros

The breadth of technologies and projects is impressive. It was always exciting to get the employee newsletter and see all the cool stuff. Also very satisfying to know you were working on projects supporting the military or homeland security. The unit I worked in was very supportive in the area of continuing education and training, as well as accomodating work/life balance. There were great opportunities for travel as our projects were worldwide. The project management processes were very mature and robust, and did a great job of encouraging the PM to be on the top of his game. I learned a ton about change and risk management.

Cons

In our market, SAIC paid below market rates. The benefits and stock options made up for some of it, but it was not enough. The vast majority of opportunities with SAIC are in Washington DC and San Diego. I met many people who were with the company a long time, and had many assignments, in those regions. But outside those regions, if your contract or project is over, there may be limited opportunities. SAIC is a 30-year old company. Early on, the company was very entrepeneurial and aggressive. As the company has grown, a lot of that passion is lost, and it's just a job for a lot of employees.
