Pros

Working on direct contracts, i.e. charging your per-hour rate to the government, can be lucrative and profitable; you will be treated like a star money-maker

Cons

Working overhead, i.e. supporting accounting, contract and other internal software, is considered dead-weight and opportunities and raises are limited

Pros

Decent pay and decent benefits. If you want stability, this is the company for you. You'll be doing government contracting, which is often very laid-back. It is very easy to blend into the background here.

Cons

It's very easy to wind up on a terrible project. If you aren't careful, you will quickly find yourself stagnating as a developer. All of the new people that come to my project are desperate new college graduates without other options. To be fair though, that's what I was when I got here. They seem to have a hard time holding on to good mid-level talent. Company culture is non-existent since most of the time you'll be working at a customer site (a government facility). There will be other SAIC employees there, but it's still a government facility and you'll be a government employee in all but name. These downsides aren't specific to SAIC, but are typical of the downsides generally found in defense contracting. SAIC is a defense contractor though, so most of them apply. Bottom line: If you don't want just ANY job, then seriously consider the points above.

Pros

Overall I have had a great experience with SAIC. The people I work with are knowledgeable and think outside of the box. We constantly strive to deliver the best possible product to our customers which means using up-to-date technologies and methodologies. I continue to learn and develop my skills during my time in this position. Benefits are as good as they can be with the state of our healthcare system in the US. SAIC does what is possible to add perks and extra benefits that will help their employees.

Cons

SAIC does a lot of business with government contracts. The state of that work can be a headache in itself. These contracted engineering projects can result in working on severely out-of-date technologies or legacy applications. Sometimes the immediate management overlook the best possible team structures. This is such a minor con though.
