Pros

Good progression to a managerial position from the entry level. Meaning that you can be a store manager within 1-2 years. Area Management at district level is very good and they're very experienced and knowledgable for the area I worked in. Annual events outside of work. Also socials outside of work. Sales training is very good and I did learn a lot from being employed by Shurgard. Diverse role which offers a lot of diverse challenges which were fun. Mainly working to KPIs in up selling and debt collection. Sales scripts help in developing confidence to sell products. Working weekends are easy as the opening hours are a lot shorter than most other retail shops.

Cons

Single manned means that you spend the majority time of working in store on your own after you have passed your probation. After you are promoted to Store Manager you cannot go any higher. All management positions are employed from outside the company. Other stores within the company steal contracts (which is what your comission is based on). When raised the company doesn't do anything about it. Cleaning prioritised for Shurgard Staff to save money for the company. As a Assistant Store Manager or Store Manager you are expected to clean for a few hours on a daily basis. Customers expected to pay price hikes after every 6 months. Management leave you with no alternative to over come this issue. They either stay and pay the inflated rent or leave to a competitor. This can affect the money you take home in bonus. The rota based system means you work three weekends out of four. Leaving you with only one weekend where you don't work. The basic has been increased but Shurgard have halved the comission. That means that the sales incentive has been reduced significantly.
