Pros

Nice colleagues, lots of learning at the beginning.

Cons

The place is crawling with consultants, who have no management experience, hire their friends for leadership positions and promote each other. If you’re not an ex consultant, you have no chance to get higher as senior manager - even getting there is a miracle. Management discriminates people based on informal relationships - who’s whose friend - and HR is useless in solving issues. Unless promoted, salary raise is insignificant and the company rules only apply to some people. The company doesn't value loyalty and they think that giving free fruits and snacks is the only way to keep employees satisfied. Carrier development depends highly on your manager, if he or she doesn't like you, you have no chance to further develop your skills and even less chances to get promoted.

Pros

As a first job when moving to Berlin, there were a lot of positives to working at Wayfair as there are a lot of young employees which create a social and fun environment. In general I found my team very welcoming and people in the office were friendly. Wayfair also offered nice perks (although probably common for a lot of Berlin companies these days) like food, gym discounts, parties and team outings etc. The work-life balance was great, I felt comfortable working from home if needed, and I very rarely had to stay late in the office.

Cons

Despite the fact that there are actually a lot of great people working at Wayfair (I had very few negative interactions), the overall company culture in terms of professional development, career progression etc. is very poor. They have a complicated review cycle process, which most people hate, and although it is comprehensive (so takes a lot of time to complete) the final decisions are not transparent and often the outcomes don't seem to reflect the performance of people in the team. This makes it really difficult to get a promotion, unless you already have a close relationship with people in management who can push for your promotion, and there are no pay increases unless you are promoted - so basically expect to remain on your starting salary for a long time. They also actively encourage churn in the company, focussing on pulling in new talent (often with consulting backgrounds), instead of developing people who are already within Wayfair, especially when it comes to hiring for management level positions. Earlier in the year there was a restructure resulting in a lot of lay-offs which were announced very suddenly, and were probably the result of over-hiring in previous years as Wayfair focussed on fast growth of the company. In general this has not created a positive atmosphere in the office, with uncertainty about a lot of roles which were changed as a result of the restructure. That's why in general I would say Wayfair could be a good place to work if you are looking for a first job in Berlin, as there a lots of positives to the social and team side, but definitely don't have expectations of career progression within the company as it can be very difficult and the processes are not transparent.

Pros

To be quite honest I feel cheated. I started working with Wayfair and I absolztely loved it. The salary was just about ok (could be much better and much more competitive), but the working hours were great, no weekends etc.

Cons

Well, all that has changed. We work weekends in horrible rotations and no advise for possible changes is ever taken seriously. Well, it's easy, since upper management has their weekends off. That is what you get for being so high up, I guess. The workload is too much even on the best of days and rewuests for overtime to be able to follow up with customers or just get any extra work done are met with „If you cannot finish your work in your shift, then you should be better with time management“. The fact that all departments are chronically understaffed is simply ignored. And while more and more people are needed, the ones who are great but were sick just one day to many are either let go or get short contract extensions. We are not humas at Wayfair and were there machines who could do the work, I do not believe senior management would bat an eye. We would be fired within a matter of minutes. Let's move on to the pay. German employees have to work with UK customers as well and are paid the same as Irish employees because (and I quote) „life in Ireland is more expensive“. Well, I have lived in both Ireland and Germany and I can assure you that it is not really. Especially since taxes are much more in Germany and the money we are left with is so much less. On top of that, a German employee services two countries and I have never ever seen a company that does not give bonusses for something like that. So when you are stressed out because of your job and quite done worrying about your money you can rest assured that any critique or even a kindly worded idea will fall on deaf ears. This is not the fault of the direct managers and their team leads as without those people, we would not be able to stand the job at all. They collect feedback as good as they can but there is no upward movement from there. It is basically „be quiet or leave“ and I dont know about anyone else, but I do not feel like that makes a great place to work and it certainly does not make Wayfair my employer of choice (which is what Wayfair aimes to be) Add to that the peril of all virtual workers: We get to see the great parties, pizza days and everything nice that is done on site in Berlin and Galway, but we are never allowed to be part of it. There is no one who even tries to rectify that, as when we have our gatherings we are not even allowed to treat those days as working days. Go figure why no one wants to come. The fun senior management have on all of their leadership get aways is a myth that I 100% believe in. As long as we are their little minions and do the work, they may as well live it up a bit. What else would you be a senior manager for? To help your employees? Oh, please.
