Pros

Good people, with an atmosphere of striving for better. Most employees feel very proud of being a part of Amex and have long tenure in the company. Lots of virtual positions. Layoffs are not common and only happen under extenuating circumstances.

Cons

When joining, get in as high as possible as it is easy to get boxed in at certain levels. Like most companies now days, advancement is very difficult with politics involved and a scorecard of results that can make or break you regardless of how good you are since there are always components that are not within your control. Salaries compared to competitors such as Visa, MasterCard, JPMorgan are lower.

Pros

Great benefits and work life balance 23 paid vacation days + 9 bank holidays! Perks: free access to most museums in NYC with your employee ID Great training and speaker opportunitities A very "nice" company to work for - and relatively easy to lateral across different business units

Cons

Can be difficult to get promoted, and can require several lateral moves (5-6 years later) Can be quite political and hierarchical, depending on business units

Mid managment are not well liked. They tend to micromanage their staff and also need to get better training and skills.
