Pros

For the most part, as long as you are semi-competent, employment is almost guaranteed. It is highly unlikely you will be terminated (unless there is an ethical violation or due to a lack of education/skills they can't keep you in management).

Cons

Every upper management person in virtually every function is cut out of the same mould-- all a group of "yes-men/women". There's very little 'vision' or 'leadership' in this critical group. In many instances, the 'purpose' of a large scale work project is "because {senior mgmt person} wants to see this"--whether it adds any strategic value to the organization or not. If you're accomplishing all your goals/tasks, then the feedback is "good job, keep doing what you're doing"...which leads to zero career movement.

Pros

Ok pay given the responsibility, ok benefits, don't have to work a lot of hours, on-site gym and cafeteria. People are pleasant.

Cons

Few promotion opportunities for Supervisors, Managers, or Directors - terrible upward mobility. There is a huge glut of Managers and Directors that have been around forever --- making it challenging to move up unless someone dies. Culture is old-school. While hours are not long, you better be at your desk between 8am-5pm. Count on a max 2%-3% raise every year, even if you were an awesome performer. Career development process is almost entirely useless. If you are career motivated, UPS is not the place for you. If you're looking for an easy 8-5 job and little responsibility given the pay, UPS is the place for you.

Pros

*pretty much guaranteed future career if you work hard and are ethical *excellent benefits *management has a roll-up-their-sleeves policy, especially at Christmas time

Cons

*union members can't get fired, even when they completely deserve it *management can be extremely hard-assed and harsh, ignorant of basic human motivation skills
