Pros

There are a number of positives about working at Vestas. First, the benefits are better than any I have ever seen (I have been out in the workforce for almost 20 years). There are exceptional medical, dental, and vision benefits, all without having to pay any portion of the premiums. The amount of vacation is outstanding - four weeks to start! Additionally, the work environment itself, meaning the people I worked with, was also quite good.

Cons

Unfortunately, there are many more negatives that positives. First, there is a significant cultural problem at Vestas. In-bred into this culture is an almost pathological need to do things the same way they have always done them; regardless of how much time and money are being wasted. This culture has also given rise to levels of bureaucracy I have never witnessed elsewhere (and I have worked for companies considerably larger than Vestas). The shear amount of documentation and level of detail required was staggering; even on the most simple of problems. In the worst of cases, I have seen co-workers spend months on tasks that should have taken hours. Third, upper management constantly makes reactionary decisions. Time and again we saw them state one thing and then do something completely different. This type of decision making inherently led to a very unstable work environment. It literally felt like you could lose your job on a moments notice without any rational explanation. Fourth - also related to the culture as a whole from my first point. This is a very arrogant company. There is a pervasive sense that one - they know what they are doing and are not too be questioned and two - any suggestion that they might be wrong is met with a wall of smugness. Going through the process of showing them a better solution, even if it is expressed with the utmost tact, is met with either some useless explanation as to why they are right or they simply ignore you. To sum up - I spent almost two years at Vestas and I can think of no reason why I would recommend for anyone to work there - with one exception. If you like companies where you can be a lemming and simply follow along with the crowd without any effort or independence of thought, then Vestas might be the place for you.

Pros

Good work Benefits and Pay

Cons

Blades had a great payroll and recruiting department. A Shared Services division was created. People out of the Portland Sales and Service business unit took over payroll & benefits, recruiting and finance. They let go of some very good, successful employees in the Blades BU and handed it over to people either incompetent or who’s #’s couldn’t match the people they let go. The culture with Blades was one of support and encouragement…the culture out of Portland is one of fear and intimidation. Before Shared Services, the Blades turnover #’s were below 5%. Portlands #’s were around 18% turnover. Now Blades turnover is matching Portlands #’s so I guess they got what they wanted. Beware, Vestas’s CEO made it very clear, if the wind tax credit is not extended by congress, all manufacturing jobs in the US will be eliminated. This is a sinking ship who’s captains in Denmark do not know what the left hand is doing from their right hand.
