Pros

The breadth and range of experience to be gained is better than most other publishing companies. The rating of 2 stars is generous and has been given purely for the professional experience. The name and brand of the publisher could be helpful for your CV.

Cons

Everything else is a con. The line management micromanage you, treat you like slaves, bully you and the senior management and HR are all complicit in this - basically they don't care. At best, the work is demanding. Morale is low, there are promises of progression in the future which never materialise. However more senior management continue to progress professionally and in job titles. The work culture is largely cold, although there are some friendly people in other departments. There are people doing the same job/duties in the same department with completely different salaries. This is completely down to the manager to decide and there is no structure in place for equal pay for the same role i.e. banding. Some production editors were making £35K+ per year and less assertive PEs were paid £20K per year for the exact same job (the same as the production assistant).

Pros

Work-life balance and opportunity to work from home.

Cons

Rigid corporate hierarchy where upper management subjugates its direct reports, creativity is squashed, and everyone is concerned with only himself. Red tape makes it impossible to do even the simplest actions without climbing over serious hurdles--e.g., get the newest version of Microsoft Office. Morale is worse than McDonald's, and McDonald's workers probably have better perks and more holidays off.

Pros

401k HSA/Good health plans included decent pay but below competitors Depending on division you work for, you may have great solutions and good managers

Cons

Way behind the times (they are still trying to migrate away from being a publishing company) in development and innovation. It was shocking to be at yearly conferences and hear what is planned and realize these are things other companies did 5-7 years ago. Very limited mobility to move up or around- They know this and have never implemented a plan Fragmented - each business unit is basically a completely different company and they do not work or play well together. Internally- paranoid managers/directors who actively prevent different unit solutions from being integrated, leveraging the capabilities of both, providing an internal reference to, or even talking to other teams. HR protects the managers/directors - not the employee. Several long-term employees sabotaged by managers and culture of employees trying to protect each other from specific managers. At the same time, if a VP or Director leaves, the ex-high ranking employee has been blamed for things that have gone wrong that they were never involved with at all. No raises in my business unit for anyone despite yearly performance reviews, etc. No investment in on-going education
