Pros

Search engine rating is meant to be a part time gig that you can fit in around your other responsibilities. It is not meant to be a salary that you primarily rely on. That said, there are definite pros and cons to each of the companies offering this very specific type of job, and Telus is by far one of the better ones. Pros include a reasonable hourly wage, adequate paid training, a well-written knowledgbase, reasonable performance expectations that are communicated well, technical issues are rare and quickly addressed, the employee site is user friendly, investing and EAP options are available that would not be available to most part time employees at other companies, it's just all around a good company to work for.

Cons

I feel like the cons are typical of most companies offering this job, and in Telus's case the cons are often offset in some way. One that most people would point out is that there are some weeks when few tasks are available, and the offset in Telus's case is that they won't penalize you for it. Yes, some other companies do penalize the rater for not making quota on a slow week; shocking I know. But Telus doesn't do that. Another thing I see frequently pointed out as a con is the unpaid exam required to onboard, but in my opinion that is significantly offset by the fact that it's taking the place of a traditional series of interviews. If asked to choose between investing time and energy into uncomfortable interviews with HR or studying for and taking an exam to test my merits for taking this job, my introverted self will happily choose the exam. Occasionally you may not understand why there is a disagreement on a particular rating score, but at least in Telus's case it's clear what they expected you to score even if you don't agree with the logic behind it. You won't be adjusting your expectations in the dark. Another potential con is the frustration of dealing with remote forms during onboarding, but again, that's going to be the same level of frustration with just about any company offering a rater job.

I can't see this company as anything but a scam

Pros

There are none. Not a single pro.

Cons

The on-boarding process took months, with constant errors and being forced to retake exams that took hours because they lost the results. Now that I am here, there's always error notifications, as in task counting is down or other outages. Now I am having trouble getting paid. I last worked months ago and now they are claiming there's yet another error. And YES, I met my minimum to get a payment. It is ridiculous. Any attempts at trying to get help take forever. They make you sign up with a large amount of websites they own, making it very difficult to even know where and how to file a complaint. In addition, the training materials are not professionally designed or written. There is no way to know how many tasks you've racked up, there's no progress bar. As for rate of pay, I have no idea. You can't see any of this while you are working. I had to contact them which took forever to get a response to. The whole operation is extremely unorganized, and frankly feels like a scam.

Pros

- They offer really good pay (right now starts ant $14/hr) and decent hours for the type of job it is! (Normally 20, sometimes up to 28) - Their training is extensive, well done, and paid - They pay you for reading emails! - They do fun things as a company such as promoting random acts of kindness for a cash prize - Their support team is really responsive and helpful - opportunities for growth/promotion

Cons

- for me, the exam was very hard, even though it’s open book. Many things are open to interpretation/your judgment which is why it’s hard. I passed on the second time, studied for sooo many hours and felt like I got accepted into my favorite university when I got in! So excited and thankful, but it is hard to pass!
