Pros

Coworkers have been fantastic and I have learned lots from them. Managers have been hit or miss, but are pleasant and friendly at least. Opportunities are boundless given the volume of work. Incredibly good work/life balance. Managers are fiercely protective of both time off and standard working hours.

Cons

Teams tend to vary a great deal but as for my personal experience, politics tend to overwrite any actual forward progress. Promotions are heavily weighted toward time in role instead of accomplishments, which mean that effort means very little on a day to day. Raises are generally abysmal (boomeranging, ie. leaving and returning is very profitable) and recognition feels scant. Historically, management has no interest in retaining strong performers, preferring to hire externally and cycling through people.

Too much politics

Pros

Teams and working conditions at Wayfair is widely different. If you're luck you can be at a team where there is good work, innovation and good team culture. This really depend on team members and the manager. Wayfair also re-structure all the time, so this won't last long. Salaries are above average especially because of the stock option + bonus they provide. Office is central location, brand new and lots of benefits in the office.

Cons

Really too much bureaucracy, too much politics in the office. Company does not measure success or keep senior level management accountable. So somebody or a team would be working on something that is really useless but can get promoted easily. Little after you would see that the upper-management suddenly decides to shut down that team. Does not make sense at all. In Berlin office, there is no vision. Lots of leaders quit recently and they were really useless. They did not do anything rather than going into endless and purposeless meetings. Wayfair is an old eng company. When they were already big, Jira Github etc did not exist. So they are used to re-inventing the wheel. This culture is slowly changing but it is really slow. Backend codebase is monolith PHP app. It is really hard to decouple and practice good eng practices. Even with brand new projects, they don't go for 3rd party systems but try to build themselves. This process of course takes years. And as mentioned above, they shutdown projects even before they finish.

Pros

So many opportunities, if you’re talented then you will succeed at wayfair.

Cons

It’s growing fast and things change all the time, so that could be hard for some people to handle?
